2027: Group endorses Kalu for Abia governorship

Support for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, to contest the 2027 Abia State governorship election has continued to gain momentum, with leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency endorsing him for the position.

The stakeholders described Kalu as a unifying figure with the capacity to reposition the state, noting that his leadership qualities and national influence make him a strong contender for the top office.

In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Press Affairs, Udora Orizu, the endorsement was said to be part of a broader mobilisation within the Ngwa political bloc, a key stronghold in Abia politics, where community leaders have openly declared their support for Kalu.

The endorsement took place during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the event, Kalu expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the reforms and policies of the APC-led Federal Government have strengthened the party and created opportunities for development across the country.

He noted that while other political parties are grappling with internal crises, the APC remains focused on governance and delivering dividends of democracy.

Kalu also assured party members and supporters of inclusive leadership, promising a people-oriented approach that prioritises grassroots engagement and addresses the needs of communities across the state.

Responding to calls for him to join the governorship race, the Deputy Speaker acknowledged the growing support but said he would make his position known at the appropriate time.

“I have received your request for me to run for governor of Abia State, and I will respond in the coming days,” he said, adding that he intends to formally address the matter at a gathering in the state capital, Umuahia.

He emphasised that any declaration regarding the governorship would be made at the appropriate constitutional venue, noting that the seat of power lies in the state capital.

Kalu’s increasing political activities across Abia, including engagements in Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis, have been seen by observers as part of a strategic buildup ahead of the 2027 elections.

His recent criticisms of certain policies of the Abia State Government, particularly in areas such as infrastructure and economic development, have also been interpreted as positioning for a possible contest.

Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti has continued to defend his administration’s performance, pointing to ongoing reforms and developmental projects aimed at improving the state’s economy and infrastructure.

With endorsements growing and political alignments gradually taking shape, Kalu’s anticipated declaration is expected to significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 governorship race in Abia State.
