The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, appears to be edging closer to declaring his intention to contest the Abia State governorship election in 2027, amid increasing pressure from political leaders and support groups.
Should he formally declare under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kalu is expected to face the incumbent governor, Alex Otti of the Labour Party, in what could become a highly competitive race.
The latest calls came from leaders and stakeholders in Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency, who described Kalu as a unifying figure capable of repositioning the state. The endorsement was part of a broader mobilisation effort within the Ngwa political bloc, a key stronghold in Abia politics.
The support was voiced during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing Isiala Ngwa Federal Constituency under the APC.
Reacting to the growing calls, Kalu acknowledged the support but stopped short of making an immediate declaration. He assured supporters that he would respond at the appropriate time.
“I have received your request for me to run for governor of Abia State, and I will respond in the coming days,” he said, adding that he intends to make his position known at a formal gathering in the state capital, Umuahia.
He emphasised that such a significant political decision should be addressed at the appropriate constitutional venue, noting that the seat of power lies in the state capital.
Kalu also expressed confidence in the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, stating that the administration’s reforms have strengthened the APC and positioned it for greater national impact.
According to him, while other political parties continue to struggle with internal challenges, the APC remains focused on governance and development, offering a pathway for growth and opportunities, particularly for Abia State.
He further assured party members and new entrants of inclusive leadership, promising a people-oriented approach that prioritises grassroots engagement and addresses pressing community needs.
Observers note that Kalu’s increasing political activities across key areas such as Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis signal a strategic buildup ahead of the 2027 elections.
His recent criticisms of certain policies of the Abia State Government, particularly in areas of infrastructure and economic development, have also been interpreted as part of his broader positioning.
Meanwhile, Governor Alex Otti has continued to defend his administration’s performance, highlighting ongoing reforms and projects aimed at improving the state’s economy and infrastructure.
With endorsements growing and political alignments gradually taking shape, Kalu’s anticipated declaration could significantly influence the dynamics of the 2027 governorship race in Abia State.
