The Executive Director of Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), Andy Eyo, has called on Nigerians to take an active role in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Eyo made the appeal in Uyo during the February reading edition of the Uyo Book Club, where the book The Crumb Eaters, authored by Martins Akpan, was reviewed.
Serving as the Special Guest Reader, Eyo urged citizens to rise against what he described as the “challenge of eating crumbs in the midst of plenty” by participating fully in electoral activities to ensure the emergence of credible leaders who prioritise economic wellbeing.
He charged members of the club to sensitise the public on the dangers of vote-selling, warning that such actions could perpetuate hardship.
“As you have read this book ‘The Crumb Eaters’ today, I charge you to move to the streets and educate the public on the dangers of selling their votes during elections,” he said.
He added that when voters choose candidates committed to tackling unemployment, inflation, and promoting agriculture, education, and small and medium-scale enterprises, citizens would no longer be left to “eat crumbs.”
Also speaking at the event, the book reviewer, Eyo Etim, observed that many books written by authors from Akwa Ibom State lack online visibility, limiting their readership and chances of recommendation by examination bodies such as the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), as well as schools and colleges nationwide.
Etim urged local authors to ensure their works are reviewed and made accessible online to attract wider patronage and institutional recognition.
He recommended The Crumb Eaters to the reading public, citing its unique stylistic approach and effective use of literary techniques to convey its message.
In his remarks, the founder of the Uyo Book Club, Udeme Nana, commended the author for his creativity and the themes explored in the book. He noted that Nigeria would witness meaningful transformation if voters consistently fulfilled their civic responsibilities without succumbing to vote-buying by politicians.
