The Abia State House of Assembly has strongly denounced the alleged rape and murder of 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, and called for justice to be served without delay.
Achumba, a student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School and an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State, was reportedly raped and killed at her off-campus residence in Umuadara, Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State on May 22, 2026.
The matter was brought before the Assembly on Tuesday through a motion of urgent public importance presented by lawmaker Ucheonye Stephen.
While expressing deep concern over the tragic incident, Stephen commended security agencies and community stakeholders for their efforts, which led to the arrest of suspects linked to the crime.
He, however, stressed the need for investigators to conclude their work promptly and ensure that justice is delivered.
The lawmaker called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Imo State Police Command, and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough, transparent, and professional investigation, while ensuring that anyone found responsible faces prosecution.
Stephen also urged the Imo State Government and relevant authorities to strengthen security measures around educational institutions, student hostels, and off-campus accommodations in order to better protect students.
Responding to the motion, the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the loss of a young person in such circumstances as a painful experience no family should endure.
He noted that investigations into the case are ongoing and assured members that the Assembly would engage Governor Alex Otti on the matter.
The Assembly reiterated its commitment to following developments in the case and ensuring that the quest for justice for Wendy Achumba remains a priority.
