The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Abia State chapter, has announced the release of abducted orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Uche Bonaventure Aguocha, bringing an end to days of uncertainty surrounding his captivity.
The development was disclosed in a statement jointly signed by the NMA State Chairman, Dr Ezenwa Ezuruike, and the Secretary, Dr Clement Ifenkoronye, on June 2, 2026.
Dr Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, was kidnapped on May 26, 2026. He regained his freedom on Tuesday, June 2, after spending nine days in captivity.
Following his release, the association announced the suspension of its previously declared total and indefinite strike action, which was scheduled to commence on the same day in protest against his abduction.
The NMA expressed gratitude to God for preserving the surgeon’s life and ensuring his safe return to his family, colleagues, and patients.
The association also appreciated the efforts of the Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti, the Imo State Government led by Governor Hope Uzodimma, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police Force, and other security agencies that contributed to securing his release.
In addition, the union acknowledged the support of members of the public, media organisations, healthcare workers, and other stakeholders who offered prayers, solidarity, and advocacy throughout the period of his captivity.
Despite welcoming the positive outcome, the NMA reiterated its concern over the growing threat faced by healthcare professionals, warning that the abduction of medical personnel must not become a recurring occurrence.
The association noted that repeated attacks on doctors, including unresolved cases such as the 2020 abduction of Prof. Iweha, continue to affect healthcare delivery and the morale of medical practitioners working under difficult conditions.
The NMA called on both federal and state governments to strengthen security around healthcare workers and medical facilities while demanding a thorough investigation to ensure those responsible for the crime are identified and prosecuted.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to serving the people of Abia State and pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities to promote a safer working environment for doctors.
It also wished Dr Aguocha a speedy recovery from the physical and emotional impact of his ordeal.
