Abia Government Expresses Satisfaction With Third Anniversary Review, Highlights Key Achievements

The Abia State Government has expressed satisfaction with the outcome of activities marking its third anniversary, describing the celebration as an important opportunity to evaluate achievements recorded since the administration took office.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia following the weekly Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Kanu, the anniversary celebrations enabled the government to conduct a comprehensive review of its performance and assess progress made across various sectors over the past three years.

He said the assessment showed that the administration had made notable strides in critical areas, including healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital development.

The commissioner cited the recently launched NKATA Development Programme as one of the government's major empowerment initiatives. He explained that youths from seven local government areas have already benefited from the programme, receiving a total of ₦306 million, while participants from the remaining ten local governments are expected to receive their support in the coming weeks.

Kanu noted that the positive outcomes of the anniversary review had further encouraged Governor Otti to approve the commissioning and flag-off of additional projects across the state.

He also announced that the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal in Umuahia and the Abia Green Shuttle Electric Bus Service have commenced full operations, aimed at improving transportation services and modernising the state's transport system in line with global standards.

The commissioner further revealed that computerised vehicle testing centres have been established and are fully operational in Umuahia and Aba, while work on the Aba Bus Terminal is nearing completion.

Speaking on tourism development, Kanu disclosed that renovation works have begun at the Ojukwu Bunker and War Museum in Umuahia in collaboration with the National War Museum Commission. He added that plans are also underway to retrofit the Ibom Waterfalls in Arochukwu.

According to him, the projects are part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen the tourism sector and boost internally generated revenue.

The commissioner also stated that the Executive Council, in partnership with the Office of the Wife of the Governor and the Ministry of Women Affairs, has approved plans to reenact the historic Aba Women's Riot of 1929.

He explained that the event is intended to honour the women who participated in the historic protest and will feature performances by musicians from different parts of the country.
