The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed worry over the growing number of road accidents in Umuahia, Aba, and on major highways across the state.
The union called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies to step up their operations, particularly in addressing overspeeding and other unsafe driving behaviors.
This position was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s monthly congress held in Umuahia. The statement, signed by the Abia NUJ Chairman, Chidi Asonye, and Secretary, Ikechukwu Onuegbu, also urged motorists to strictly adhere to traffic rules and road signs to reduce accidents.
Beyond road safety, the NUJ raised concerns about the rising level of crime in Umuahia, Aba, and other parts of the state. It called on the government and security agencies to take proactive measures to curb criminal activities before they escalate.
Residents were also encouraged to play an active role in maintaining security by promptly reporting suspicious movements to the appropriate authorities.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to its role as a watchdog, emphasizing its responsibility to hold institutions accountable and advocate for the safety and well-being of the public.
