Abia State partners US group to train health workers

The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this during a State Executive Council briefing presided over by Governor Alex Otti. According to him, the collaboration between the State Ministry of Health and the US-based healthcare consultancy is designed to drive a cultural shift in the health sector by equipping professionals with improved service delivery standards.

He explained that the initiative will promote clearer communication, stronger professional conduct, and more patient-centred care across all tiers of the system. The training will adopt a phased, top-to-bottom approach—beginning with doctors and nurses before extending to other health workers at local government levels.

As part of broader reforms, the state is also set to operationalise 53 fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centres under the Project Ekwueme initiative, expected to significantly boost primary healthcare services statewide. Additionally, the Abia State Q2 Health Pilot Project has commenced in selected hospitals and PHCs to further improve service efficiency and patient outcomes.

In another development, Kanu announced that the Paediatric Association of Nigeria has scheduled its 2027 Annual General Meeting to be hosted in Abia, describing the decision as recognition of the administration’s ongoing health sector reforms.

On immunisation efforts, the Commissioner revealed that the Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign flagged off on February 3, 2026, recorded a 96 per cent coverage—surpassing the 95 per cent target. The campaign spanned schools and social institutions statewide, engaging over 8,000 groups in the process.

Beyond healthcare, Governor Otti is expected to flag off the construction of the Enyimba International Hotel in Aba, alongside new road projects, as part of efforts to reposition Aba as a thriving commercial hub. The governor will also commence construction of the Ukwa East General Hospital in Ohanku to expand access to healthcare services in underserved communities.

The Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, reaffirmed that the partnership with QANTUS aligns with the administration’s commitment to reform. He urged residents—especially parents—to ensure their children receive routine vaccinations, assuring that all vaccines administered in the state meet established safety and preservation standards.
