The state Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating that the suspect “was promptly arrested and is being interrogated at the State CID for a case of murder.”

Domestic Dispute Turns Fatal

The deceased officer, identified as Chidiebere James, was serving at the Abia State Command of the Immigration Service.

The incident reportedly occurred in Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba in Ohuhu, Umuahia North Local Government Area.

According to reports, what began as a domestic disagreement escalated into violence in the early hours of Monday, February 16, 2026.

An eyewitness and family member told reporters that the officer was stabbed during the altercation and later confirmed dead at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where his remains have been deposited.

Sources said the crisis began on Sunday following an argument over their sick child and alleged financial challenges relating to medical treatment. The situation reportedly worsened after accusations of infidelity emerged, following the alleged discovery of incriminating text messages on the officer’s phone.

Although family members, including the deceased’s sister, were said to have intervened and settled the dispute, tensions resurfaced the following morning, leading to another confrontation inside the family home.

During the renewed quarrel, the situation reportedly escalated into a physical struggle. The deceased’s phone was allegedly damaged in the process, prompting him to seize and destroy his wife’s phone in retaliation.

The woman was then alleged to have picked up a pair of scissors nearby and stabbed her husband. He reportedly collapsed shortly after and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Confirming the development, the traditional ruler of Ekeoba Ancient Kingdom, Iheanyi Nwokenna, said he had just been informed of the incident.

The tragic development has thrown the Umuihi Umuogba community into mourning, with residents expressing concern over rising cases of domestic violence.
