Afegbua made the remarks on Wednesday while appearing on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.
He was reacting to the reported gunmen attack on Obi and other notable chieftains of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Edo State.
The incident, earlier described by Obi’s camp as an “assassination attempt,” has generated widespread reactions across the country.
Afegbua said Governor Monday Okpebholo was misinterpreted when he made a statement in July last year suggesting that Obi should inform the state government before visiting Edo.
“People misinterpreted what Governor Okpebholo meant when he made the statement in July last year, to the extent that anytime Peter Obi wants to come to Edo, he should please inform the state government,” Afegbua said.
“But because Obi is a politically exposed person, we would expect that he would extend the courtesy of informing the government of the day.”
He further suggested that the violence should be viewed within the context of internal disputes within the ADC.
“What happened in Edo should be located within the ambit of the ADC—one factional group of the ADC versus another faction of the ADC,” the commissioner added.
The attack has continued to fuel debate over political tensions and security concerns in the state.
