Electricity Not Luxury, But Right of Every Community — Kaduna Gov

The governor made the remarks on Wednesday during the flag-off of Phase One of the distribution of 600 transformers and accessories across the 23 local government areas of the state, alongside the deployment of 10,000 solar-powered street lights.

“We are enabling welders, tailors, cold-room operators, ICT hubs, and manufacturers to operate with dignity and predictability,” Sani said.

“We are sending a clear message that access to energy must no longer be the privilege of a few urban centres but the right of every community.”

He described electricity as “not a luxury but the bloodstream of modern society,” stressing that reliable power supply is central to economic growth and improved service delivery.

Boosting SMEs, Healthcare, Education

Sani noted that dependable electricity powers hospitals, preserves vaccines, lights classrooms, drives industries, irrigates farms, and sustains small businesses.

He warned that without stable power supply, “development is stunted, security is weakened, and opportunity is constrained.”

Since assuming office nearly three years ago, the governor said his administration has completed previously stalled projects and initiated new power interventions.

Under an Indian-Exim Bank initiative, he disclosed that solar mini-grid installations have been completed in 190 out of 225 Primary Health Care Centres, delivering 1.35 megawatts of clean energy.

He added that 32 abandoned systems — 21 in PHCs and 11 in General Hospitals — were restored, resulting in improved service delivery and reduced maternal and child mortality.

Infrastructure and Industrial Growth

The governor also announced the completion of the long-abandoned 2x60MVA, 132/33kV substation at the Green Economic Zone in Maraban Jos.

According to him, the substation is expected to unlock investment potential, stimulate manufacturing, and position Kaduna as a competitive economic hub.

In Kubau Local Government Area, a 100-kilowatt solar project in Damau has restored electricity to 450 households after a decade of darkness. Additional distributed generation projects totaling 1,694 kilowatts are underway in Chara, Gidan Kundi, Gora, and Hawan Mai Mashi.

Sani further highlighted network rehabilitation projects across the state’s three senatorial districts, including upgrades in Zaria, Sabon-Gari, Kudan, Kagarko, Manchok, Tafa, Jere, and other communities.

He disclosed that a Memorandum of Understanding signed on October 22, 2025, with the Rural Electrification Agency will facilitate a 1.5-megawatt project for Kaduna Polytechnic and an 8-megawatt allocation for Ahmadu Bello University.

Urban generation projects include 2 megawatts in the TRAPCO community, with additional plans for Shika and Makarfi to further strengthen local manufacturing capacity.
