Enugu Enforces N500,000 Penalty for One-Way Driving Offences

The Enugu State Government has commenced full enforcement of a N500,000 fine for motorists who violate traffic rules by driving against the flow, commonly referred to as one-way driving.

The State Commissioner for Transport, Obi Ozor, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Enugu. He explained that the move is aimed at tackling the growing number of road accidents and instilling discipline among drivers.

Ozor noted that despite significant investments in road infrastructure, including the construction of dual carriageways and installation of medians, many motorists continue to disregard traffic regulations.

He expressed concern that drivers still engage in dangerous practices even on well-structured roads, putting lives at risk. Areas such as Abakpa and the Penoks axis were highlighted as hotspots where one-way driving persists despite clear road markings and physical barriers.

According to the commissioner, the enforcement will apply across all roads in the state, as the government seeks to address the rising number of fatalities linked to traffic violations.

He lamented the frequency of accidents on otherwise good roads, describing the situation as unacceptable.

Beyond the monetary penalty, Ozor revealed that offenders would also be subjected to psychiatric evaluation. The assessments are intended to determine whether substance abuse or mental health issues contributed to their actions.

He added that such evaluations could lead to rehabilitation recommendations, which offenders must complete before reclaiming their impounded vehicles after paying the fine.

The commissioner stressed that the initiative is not designed to generate revenue but to save lives. He urged motorists to be patient and comply with traffic laws, noting that taking the proper route or waiting briefly can prevent fatal consequences.

Ozor also disclosed that the government has intensified public awareness campaigns in partnership with transport unions and the media to promote compliance.

As part of these efforts, authorities have held engagements with operators of taxis, tricycles, buses, tankers, and tipper vehicles to reinforce the importance of road safety.

He warned that strict enforcement measures, including vehicle impoundment, would continue until motorists fully adhere to traffic regulations.

The government, he added, remains committed to improving road safety and reducing preventable accidents across the state.
