The Mandate Secretary for Transport at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Elechi Chinedum, has disclosed plans to build additional modern bus terminals across the Federal Capital Territory to improve commuter comfort and reduce crime.
Chinedum made the announcement on Tuesday at Jabi Park in Abuja during an eye-screening and drug sensitisation programme for transport operators. The event was organised by the Transporters for Tinubu 2027 Support Group.
According to him, beyond the existing mega bus terminals located in Mabushi, Kubwa, and the Central Area, the administration is planning to construct three additional terminals to further strengthen the transport system and provide safe, comfortable spaces for commuters.
Earlier, the National Coordinator of Transporters for Tinubu 2027, Segun Obayendo, said the initiative aims to uplift hardworking transporters nationwide. He noted that the programme includes free eye tests and treatment, sensitisation of commercial drivers on drug abuse, and access to soft loans through transporters’ cooperative societies to promote safety and sustainability in the sector.
Also speaking, the Assistant Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (FCT branch), Isiaka Abdullahi, appealed to the government to address the issue of double taxation affecting drivers in the FCT.
He further suggested that instead of offering loans, the government should provide vehicles to drivers under structured repayment plans. According to him, such an approach would ensure accountability and prevent diversion of funds.
Meanwhile, the Assistant Director of Drug Prevention and Sensitisation at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Ndubuisi Agabus, cautioned drivers against drug abuse and misuse.
Agabus warned that substance abuse could lead to accidents, violence, poor driving performance, and serious health complications, including addiction, depression, anxiety, heart disease, and liver damage. He added that it could also cause financial strain due to medical expenses and loss of income.
