The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Abia State Sector Command, has cautioned motorists against intimidating cyclists on roads across the state, urging greater respect and adequate space for bicycle riders.
The Sector Commander, Ngozi Ezeoma, gave the warning on Wednesday in Umuahia during activities marking the United Nations World Cycling Day 2026.
She noted that cyclists often struggle for space on major roads, as many motorists either disregard their presence or fail to provide safe riding conditions.
Ezeoma called on state governors, local government chairmen, and urban planners to prioritize cycling-friendly infrastructure, stressing that road design should cater not only to vehicles but also to cyclists.
According to her, cycling helps reduce air pollution, ease traffic congestion, and improve public health, making it an important part of sustainable transportation systems.
She emphasized that motorists must treat cyclists with courtesy and ensure they are given adequate space on the road to prevent avoidable accidents.
Ezeoma also appealed to development stakeholders to integrate cyclist needs into urban planning, noting that modern cities should be designed for people as well as cars.
At the same event, the Abia State Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Ukaegbu, encouraged residents—especially young people—to embrace cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation.
He said cycling would help reduce carbon emissions and lessen dependence on fossil fuels, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment.
