A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River State, Soni Abang, has defended President Bola Tinubu over the increase in fuel prices, attributing the trend to global economic factors rather than domestic policies.
Abang made the remarks during a mega endorsement rally held at the Ikom Township Stadium on Saturday, where he addressed party supporters.
According to him, international developments such as geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in global crude oil markets have significantly influenced fuel prices, making it unfair to hold the current administration solely responsible.
“Global issues are affecting economies across the world. These are not challenges that started here, and fuel prices in Nigeria are still relatively competitive,” he said.
He noted that the Tinubu administration inherited a struggling economy but has since introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the country’s financial outlook.
Abang added that decisions such as the removal of fuel subsidy, though difficult, were necessary steps toward achieving long-term economic stability and growth.
He also stated that the impact of rising fuel prices on food costs is beginning to ease, suggesting that government interventions are gradually taking effect.
“Food prices are coming down, and the earlier surge was influenced by factors that created unnecessary panic. The situation is improving,” he said.
Highlighting ongoing infrastructure development, Abang pointed to major road projects across the country as evidence of the government’s commitment to progress.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting the administration, expressing confidence that the ongoing reforms would soon deliver measurable benefits.
The rally attracted a large turnout of party supporters and featured endorsements for President Tinubu and Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, ahead of upcoming elections.
