Dane’s family confirmed his passing in a statement cited by multiple outlets.
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” the statement read.
Last year, the actor publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Born in San Francisco, Dane made his television debut in 1991 with an appearance on Saved by the Bell. He rose to widespread fame in 2006 when he joined Grey’s Anatomy as the charismatic plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan — a role that earned him global recognition and a loyal fan base. He appeared in 139 episodes of the long-running series through 2021.
Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane played Jason Dean in Charmed and starred as Captain Tom Chandler in the action drama The Last Ship. He also appeared in the HBO drama Euphoria.
Dane is survived by his family, including actress Rebecca Gayheart. Tributes have begun pouring in from fans and colleagues across the entertainment industry.
