Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for stronger national institutions and an independent judiciary, insisting that Nigeria’s future development depends on respect for the rule of law and justice.
Jonathan made the remarks on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Law Week of the Yenagoa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association in Bayelsa State.
The event, themed “Securing the Future: Sustainable National Asset Protection in Africa; Opportunities, Risks and Regulatory Pathways,” brought together legal practitioners, judges, and other stakeholders to discuss governance and legal reforms.
Speaking at a plenary session, the former president urged members of the legal profession to uphold justice, fairness, and integrity, describing both the Bench and the Bar as custodians of the nation’s legal system.
He stressed that Nigeria’s stability and progress depend on institutions that are allowed to function independently and effectively without undue influence.
According to him, the country can only achieve a sustainable future when justice takes precedence over power, and when institutions are stronger than individuals.
“As ministers in the temple of justice, I reminded them that the future of our nation can only be secured when justice is stronger than power; when institutions are stronger than individuals; when our post-colonial education system is thoughtfully reformed to meet the demands of a changing world; and when the law affords equal protection to both the powerful and the vulnerable,” Jonathan said.
He also emphasized the need for reforms in Nigeria’s education system, noting that it must be restructured to meet modern global demands and challenges.
Jonathan further stated that sustainable national development can only be achieved through accountable leadership, strong institutions, and a legal system that guarantees equal protection and opportunity for all citizens.
