Journalists covering the projects inspection tour of Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya narrowly escaped a fatal accident in Gombe State following what was described as reckless driving by the Shongom Local Government Chairperson’s driver.

The incident occurred while the journalists were travelling in the Correspondents’ Chapel bus as part of the governor’s convoy across various local government areas in the state.

According to reports, the chairperson’s driver allegedly attempted a dangerous overtake, forcing the journalists’ vehicle off the road and brushing the driver’s side mirror in the process.

No casualty was recorded in the incident, but the development sparked concerns among media practitioners accompanying the governor on the tour.

The near-tragedy comes amid recent fatal accidents involving journalists in the North-East region.

In Gombe, seven journalists and media workers recently lost their lives in a fatal road accident.

Similarly, in Bauchi State, 14 journalists were involved in an accident that left one dead and several others injured.

The deceased, Kani Ben, a cameraman with Channels Television, was buried last Saturday in Adamawa State.

The latest incident has renewed calls for improved safety measures for journalists covering official assignments and public events.
