The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has described June 12 as a historic symbol of the collective struggle for freedom, justice, and the right of citizens to determine their future through democratic processes.
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by the state chairman, Peter Azubuike, the party said Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the importance of active citizen participation in strengthening democratic governance.
The party noted that as residents of Abia State continue to experience what it described as the dividends of democracy under Governor Alex Otti, it remains essential for citizens to engage fully in the electoral process to ensure democracy continues to thrive.
It said it was joining Nigerians in commemorating the courage and sacrifices of those who fought for the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule in the country.
The Labour Party also used the opportunity to call on eligible residents of the state to take part in the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Continuous Voter Registration exercise by registering and obtaining their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
It particularly urged young people who have reached the voting age of 18 to seize the opportunity to register and become active participants in shaping the future of the state and the country.
“The PVC is more than a card; it is the most powerful democratic instrument in the hands of the people. It is the tool through which citizens elect leaders, hold governments accountable, protect good governance, and safeguard the future of generations yet unborn,” the statement read.
The party warned that failure to register would amount to surrendering one’s democratic voice, stressing that every eligible citizen has a responsibility to participate in the electoral process.
It further called on community leaders, religious bodies, youth groups, market associations, transport unions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to support voter education and mobilisation efforts.
The Labour Party added that while Democracy Day is a time for celebration, it is also a reminder that democracy must be protected through continuous participation, vigilance, and civic responsibility.
“Together, let us strengthen democracy, protect the gains of good governance, and secure a brighter future for Abia State through active voter participation,” the party stated.
