A former federal lawmaker and governorship aspirant under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Shehu Bawa, has distributed more than 10,000 bags of rice and other grains to vulnerable residents across Kaduna State.
The distribution exercise, held in Kaduna and other parts of the state, targeted widows, the elderly, persons with disabilities and low-income earners grappling with rising living costs.
Speaking during the event, Bawa said the gesture was aimed at cushioning the impact of economic hardship, particularly during the Ramadan and Lenten seasons.
“This period of Ramadan and Lent is one marked by fasting, prayer and reflection. It is important that we extend support to the vulnerable among us,” he said.
He noted that prevailing economic challenges had placed immense strain on households across the state.
“Many families can barely afford essential commodities. As leaders, we must demonstrate empathy and practical commitment to the welfare of the people,” Bawa added.
The PDP aspirant maintained that the initiative was not politically motivated but aligned with his longstanding commitment to supporting the less privileged.
“It is part of me to always reach out and put smiles on the faces of the people, whether I hold public office or not,” he said.
He also stressed that compassion and social responsibility remain core principles of the PDP, adding that the party is committed to policies prioritising citizens’ welfare and prosperity.
As political activities gather momentum ahead of the governorship election, Bawa urged residents to reflect on the current state of affairs and make informed decisions.
“We must make informed decisions in the forthcoming elections. The PDP represents a viable alternative capable of addressing the challenges facing our state,” he said, while calling for grassroots mobilisation and active participation in the electoral process.
Beneficiaries at the event described the intervention as timely, saying the food items would ease the burden on their families during the fasting period.
Within Christianity, Lent is observed as a 40-day period of fasting, sacrifice and repentance, commemorating the time Jesus Christ spent in the wilderness before His crucifixion. In Islam, Ramadan is a sacred month dedicated to fasting, prayer and spiritual renewal, and is regarded as one of the five pillars of Islam.
