In a statement shared on its X account on Thursday, the agency acknowledged that cases involving domestic and sexual violence often generate intense public reactions. However, it maintained that due process and professional investigation must remain central to achieving justice.
“Investigations matter. In cases of alleged Domestic and Sexual Violence, emotions run high and public attention can be intense,” the statement read.
“However, thorough and professional investigation remains the foundation of justice. It protects survivors, safeguards the rights of the accused, and ensures that outcomes are based on facts, not speculation.”
The agency further cautioned that false claims and the spread of misinformation could weaken public trust and make it more difficult for genuine survivors to come forward.
“False claims and misinformation can damage public trust and make it harder for genuine survivors to be believed. At the same time, we must never create an environment that silences victims. Justice requires truth, evidence, and due process. Always,” it added.
The statement comes amid ongoing public discussion surrounding a TikTok user identified as Mirabel, who alleged that she was raped in her apartment by an unknown assailant. The DSVA initially launched efforts to locate the survivor but later confirmed that the incident occurred in Ogun State, outside its jurisdiction, before transferring the matter to the appropriate authorities.
The Ogun State Police Command subsequently dismissed online rumours that Mirabel had been arrested. According to the command’s spokesperson, she was not taken into custody but was receiving medical attention at a hospital.
Meanwhile, social media commentator VeryDarkMan claimed that Mirabel had allegedly recanted her initial account, stating that the rape report was false — a development that has further fueled debate online.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
