Mother, son escape death as car overturns in Lagos

In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, the agency described the early morning crash as a lone but serious traffic incident.

According to the statement, the Lexus Jeep with registration number KJA 39 JT, travelling from Isheri inward Igando, suddenly lost stability and “overturned thrice before finally coming to rest” during heavy peak-hour traffic along the busy corridor.

LASTMA said its operatives stationed within the axis responded swiftly to the emergency, rapidly mobilising to the scene and executing a coordinated rescue intervention. The officers successfully extricated the occupants from the severely damaged vehicle.

The mother and her son were rescued with visible bruises and mild physiological trauma, narrowly avoiding what the agency described as a potentially fatal catastrophe.

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force attached to the Igando Division reinforced the rescue operation, maintaining crowd control and securing the scene throughout the evacuation process.

Family members of the victims reportedly arrived shortly after being notified and conveyed them for further medical evaluation and treatment.

To prevent secondary accidents and ease traffic congestion along the Lagos State University corridor, LASTMA coordinated the evacuation of the wrecked vehicle with support from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). The vehicle was subsequently handed over to the police for investigation and necessary administrative procedures.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed relief that no lives were lost. He wished the victims a speedy recovery and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to rapid emergency response and proactive traffic management.

Bakare-Oki also cautioned motorists to adhere strictly to speed limits and conduct routine mechanical checks before embarking on journeys, warning that excessive speed combined with mechanical faults such as defective braking systems “constitutes a dangerous precursor to severe roadway tragedies on major expressways.”
