Nigerian students have achieved remarkable success at the 10th Huawei Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China, securing multiple top honours in one of the world’s largest technology talent contests.
According to a statement released by Huawei on Tuesday, Nigerian teams won two Grand Prizes, two First Prizes, and one Second Prize at the global finals, which took place from June 2 to 5, 2026.
The competition attracted more than 201,000 students from over 100 countries and regions under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future,” with Nigeria accounting for over 6,000 participants in the earlier stages of the contest.
After advancing through national and regional qualifiers, five Nigerian teams made up of 15 students from institutions including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Port Harcourt, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Minna, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University reached the global finals.
The students competed across multiple categories, including Network, Cloud, Computing, and Innovation tracks, where they delivered outstanding performances that earned them top awards.
Nigeria secured two Grand Prizes in the Innovation and Network categories, while its teams in the Cloud track won two First Prizes. Another team also clinched a Second Prize in the Computing category.
Huawei described the outcome as a historic achievement, noting that Nigeria became the first country in the competition’s history to produce two all-female teams that both won Grand Prizes.
The company highlighted that this milestone underscores the growing strength of Nigerian talent in global technology innovation and digital problem-solving.
During the awards ceremony, Nigeria’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mairo Musa Abbas, presented the Grand Prize trophies to the winning teams, a moment Huawei said reflected the national importance of the achievement.
According to the company, the presence of a senior diplomatic official added significance to the victory, highlighting its importance not only for the universities involved but also for Nigeria’s broader innovation ecosystem.
One of the standout moments of the competition was the Innovation Team’s award-winning project, “Paravision,” an artificial intelligence-powered healthcare solution developed using Huawei technologies.
The system is designed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of malaria and intestinal parasites, and was praised by judges for its technical depth and real-world applicability.
Huawei said the project demonstrated how emerging technologies can be applied to address pressing health challenges in developing countries.
The company added that the success of Nigerian participants reflects the increasing capacity of young innovators in the country, particularly women in technology, to create solutions with global relevance.
It further noted that with stronger industry-academic collaboration and practical ICT training, Nigeria’s talent pool is well-positioned to compete globally in the era of artificial intelligence.
The Huawei ICT Competition, launched in 2015, is an annual global programme aimed at promoting ICT skills, innovation, and knowledge exchange among university students and lecturers.
It is recognised by the UNESCO Global Skills Academy as a flagship initiative and has grown into one of the most prominent student technology competitions worldwide.
Nigeria’s latest performance adds to its growing reputation in international tech competitions and reflects increasing investment in digital skills development and innovation across the country’s higher education institutions.
