Ohanaeze backs Otti, calls for constructive opposition in Abia

The Abia State chapter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has passed a vote of confidence in Governor Alex Otti, commending his administration for deliberate efforts to improve the standard of living of residents.

Speaking in Umuahia on Thursday, the socio-cultural organisation reviewed the governor’s performance over the past three years, highlighting significant progress across key sectors while stressing the importance of constructive opposition in strengthening democracy.

In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Godwin Adindu, the group praised Otti for what it described as intentional governance and people-focused policies.

“It is against this backdrop that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Abia State, is passing a vote of commendation and confidence on Governor Alex Otti for being deliberate in uplifting the standard of life of citizens and residents,” the statement read.

The organisation noted that the state has witnessed notable transformation in areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and civil service, attributing the improvements to what it described as “radical innovations” introduced by the administration.

Ohanaeze also commended the governor’s infrastructural renewal efforts, particularly in Aba, which it said have boosted economic activities and enhanced the ease of doing business within the state.

According to the group, these strides have positioned Otti as a symbol of the Igbo spirit of innovation, resilience, and enterprise.

Beyond infrastructure and economic reforms, the organisation applauded initiatives aimed at promoting Igbo culture and identity. These include the establishment of the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy and the introduction of policies to strengthen the teaching of the Igbo language in secondary schools.

It further highlighted cultural initiatives such as encouraging public officials to wear traditional attire on designated days, describing them as steps toward preserving and promoting Igbo heritage.

Ohanaeze stated that its endorsement should serve as motivation for the governor to sustain his development efforts and continue delivering people-oriented governance.

The group also reaffirmed its commitment to recognising and supporting outstanding Igbo leaders and individuals contributing to the advancement of the region.

Speaking separately, the Assistant Publicity Secretary, Chief Obinna Ibe, explained that the organisation remains deeply invested in the socio-economic and political progress of Ndigbo.

He noted that Ohanaeze’s role includes promoting good governance, protecting Igbo cultural identity, and advocating for an enabling environment where individuals and businesses can thrive.

While expressing satisfaction with the current administration, the group emphasised the need for a viable and constructive opposition to ensure accountability, strengthen democratic processes, and sustain long-term development in Abia State.
