The Executive Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has restated his administration’s commitment to youth development, entrepreneurship, and the continuous upgrade of facilities at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in the state.
Governor Otti made the pledge during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream I corps members deployed to Abia State, held at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, Bende Local Government Area. He was represented at the event by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE.
Welcoming the corps members, Otti described their participation in the service year as a reflection of patriotism, dedication, and readiness to contribute to national development.
He encouraged them to make the most of the orientation programme and other initiatives designed to prepare them for a productive service year.
The governor also disclosed plans to commence the second phase of the ongoing rehabilitation and retrofitting of the orientation camp, aimed at improving living and training conditions for corps members.
“Very soon, we shall commence the second phase of the retrofitting of this camp, which will include the completion of hostel facilities, including staff hostels, as well as the construction of a separate parade ground and other essential facilities,” he said.
According to him, the upgrade is intended to create a more conducive environment that supports learning, personal development, and the welfare of corps members serving in the state.
Otti further urged the corps members to embrace entrepreneurship and financial discipline, encouraging them to take advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) Programme and other available support schemes.
“Develop a culture of savings, spend wisely, and explore the various business funding opportunities available through the NYSC and other support schemes. Such financial discipline can lay the foundation for sustainable ventures at the end of your service year,” he advised.
He also charged them to uphold discipline, integrity, loyalty, and commitment to national service, while encouraging them to contribute positively to their host communities through impactful initiatives.
The governor reaffirmed that the Abia State Government remains committed to strengthening the NYSC scheme and promoting national integration, youth empowerment, and leadership development.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board in Abia State and Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Jane Igwe, welcomed the corps members and urged them to take the orientation exercise seriously.
He commended Governor Otti for his consistent support for the scheme, particularly in infrastructure renewal and welfare improvements.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Yunusa Tanimu, also appreciated the state government’s support, describing the scheme as a key platform for national unity and grassroots development.
Highlights of the event included the administration of the Oath of Allegiance by the Chief Judge of Abia State, Hon. Justice Lilian Abai, represented by Hon. Justice Chido Nwakanma, officially marking the commencement of the orientation course.
The ceremony was attended by top government officials, security commanders, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
