Presidential Media Team Arrives Abia to Assess Federal, State Projects

A high-level Renewed Hope Ambassadors Presidential Media Team arrived in Abia State on Tuesday to inspect ongoing federal and state government projects across the state.

The visit was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting held on Monday and chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

According to Kanu, the visit is part of the Renewed Hope National Media Tour, an initiative designed to showcase key projects being executed by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governments across Nigeria.

“This is part of the Renewed Hope National Media Tour of projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and state governments,” Kanu stated.

He explained that the nationwide exercise covers all six geopolitical zones and described the team's visit to Abia as timely, considering the cordial relationship between the state and the Federal Government.

“The visit by the team is quite timely, given the strong working relationship between the state government and the Federal Government.

“That partnership has resulted in collaborative projects such as the airport development project and the recently inaugurated Renewed Hope Housing Estate project,” he said.

Kanu noted that members of the media team would visit various locations across the state to assess road infrastructure and other development projects being implemented in the 17 local government areas.

He added that the tour would conclude with a civic reception hosted by Governor Otti in honour of the delegation.

On transportation, the commissioner disclosed that the state’s ultra-modern bus terminal in Umuahia has commenced full operations, with transport operators gradually relocating to the facility.

He explained that the transition would take place in phases.

“The first phase involves the Abia Green Shuttle buses. The second phase involves operators in the informal transport sector, while the third phase will accommodate formal transport operators,” he said.

According to him, many stakeholders have expressed satisfaction with the quality of services and operations at the terminal, although some transport operators initially resisted the relocation.

“There appears to be some resistance from a few operators, which is understandable because people do not always embrace change immediately,” Kanu noted.

He revealed that the relocation exercise affects about 39 transport operators and announced that enforcement measures would begin immediately to ensure full compliance.

“Enforcement will commence today (Tuesday) to ensure that all operators move into the terminal,” he added.

Speaking further on infrastructure, Kanu reaffirmed the state government's commitment to expanding and improving road networks across Abia.

“Despite the achievements recorded so far, work on transforming road infrastructure across the state is still ongoing,” he said.

The commissioner also announced that the Ministry of Women Affairs, in collaboration with the Office of the Wife of the Governor, would mark the International Day of the Boy Child on June 16, 2026.

In addition, he disclosed that the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, working alongside the Governor’s wife’s office, joined the global community in observing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

As part of activities marking the event, Kanu said the ministry would embark on public awareness campaigns focused on the rights of older persons, available support services, and reporting channels for abuse cases.

The initiative will also involve engagement with senior citizens, community leaders, and development partners to promote the implementation of the Senior Citizens Policy Framework.

He added that the government plans to strengthen collaboration with healthcare institutions, community stakeholders, and social protection agencies to improve prevention, reporting, response, and referral systems for elderly citizens.

According to Kanu, the overall goal is to ensure that older persons in Abia can live with dignity, security, and hope while fostering a more inclusive society.
