Speaking on Wednesday during an interfaith breaking of fast (Iftar) with senators at the Presidential Villa, the president said critics are entitled to their opinions but maintained that he has done nothing wrong.
Reacting to claims that he was “killing the opposition,” Tinubu said:
“Critics must talk; when they accused me of killing the opposition, I didn’t have a gun. I could have given myself a license when I have the authority.”
The president added that he does not blame politicians who choose to defect, describing the current national situation as challenging. He referenced terrorism and banditry as major threats destabilizing the country.
Tinubu called on political leaders to embrace unity in line with the vision of Nigeria’s founding fathers, stressing the need to strengthen constitutional democracy.
“We should unite in a way that our forefathers contemplated to bring about a constitutional democracy to pull us together.
It didn’t say that we should fight; it’s a good thing that we are working in harmony.”
The remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and debates over the state of opposition politics in Nigeria.
