According to LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, one of the deceased was the driver of truck T-392 LA, who was trapped in the steering compartment and required extrication by the agency’s Rescue and Recovery Team. The second victim was a suspected trespasser recovered from beneath one of the trucks after an intensive search operation.
The recovery was conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), with security maintained by the Ilasa Police Division to preserve the scene and evidence. The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit also assisted in evacuating the victims.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized the importance of disciplined and safety-conscious driving, particularly in high-density freight corridors. He urged truck operators to adhere to speed limits, employ adequate warning mechanisms, and exercise heightened vigilance during nocturnal freight operations.
LASEMA confirmed the deaths and provided further details. According to Permanent Secretary Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, preliminary investigations revealed that one moving container truck rammed into a stationary truck from behind due to excessive speed. The collision trapped the driver and his motor boy inside the moving truck, both of whom were pronounced dead at the scene.
Recovery operations are ongoing to evacuate the affected trucks and restore traffic flow. Motorists have been advised to comply with traffic directives and exercise patience while clearance operations continue.
This incident comes just two days after another truck accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway killed six people after the vehicle lost its brakes and collided with vehicles and bystanders at the Old Toll-Gate section.
Authorities reiterated the need for responsible driving to prevent avoidable road tragedies.
