UniAbuja Expels 28 Students Over Exam Malpractice, Cultism, Result Forgery

The decision was approved at a recent senate meeting, following the consideration of recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee, according to a statement issued by the acting director of information, Habib Yakoob.

Range of Offences

While exam malpractice featured prominently, the university disclosed that the offences went beyond academic misconduct. The affected students were implicated in allegations including threat to life, assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cultism, and possession or use of hard drugs.

Some were also accused of falsifying ‘O’ Level results uploaded to the university’s admission portal — a development that raises concerns about admission screening and document verification processes.

In addition to the expulsions, the senate approved the withdrawal of certificates from 15 former students who reportedly failed to honour repeated invitations to appear before the disciplinary panel. The move signals that accountability, in the university’s view, does not end at graduation.

Some Cleared, Others Warned

Not all cases resulted in severe penalties. The senate exonerated nine students after investigations found no wrongdoing. Meanwhile, 33 others received formal warnings over infractions such as conspiracy, hostel racketeering, and fighting.

University’s Position

Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Fawehinmi reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe and disciplined learning environment. He stressed that academic integrity remains sacrosanct and that the university will continue to enforce its regulations without compromise.

The development highlights ongoing challenges facing tertiary institutions in Nigeria — from exam malpractice to cult-related activities — and underscores the increasing emphasis on institutional discipline as universities seek to protect their academic credibility.
