Abia Assembly Summons Security Chiefs Over Rising Kidnapping Cases, Other Security Concerns

The Abia State House of Assembly has resolved to invite security chiefs in the state for a crucial meeting aimed at addressing rising security challenges, particularly cases of kidnapping and other related crimes.
The resolution was unanimously adopted on Tuesday during the plenary session of the House.
The decision followed a motion presented under the “matter of urgent public importance” by the Deputy Speaker, Augustine Okezie Mmeregini, concerning the abduction of Mr. Dennis Okechi Izuchukwu and Mrs. Onyiyechi Ekechukwu by suspected gunmen at Umuawa, Alaocha community, Ohuhu, in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
Mmeregini described the growing cases of kidnapping and other criminal activities in parts of the state as a serious security threat, urging the House to call on the Abia State Homeland Security Agency and other security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting the lives and property of residents.
The Deputy Speaker also urged the House to encourage the mayors of the 17 local government areas in Abia State to revive and strengthen community vigilante groups within their respective areas.
He further called for traditional rulers and Presidents-General of various communities to be encouraged by local government authorities to remain vigilant and actively support security efforts in their communities.
Following deliberations on the matter, the House, presided over by the Speaker, Emmanuel Emeruwa, described the security concerns raised as critical and requiring urgent attention.
The lawmakers supported the prayers presented by the Deputy Speaker and resolved to invite security chiefs in the state for an interface aimed at finding effective solutions to the security challenges.
