The Abia State Government, in collaboration with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), has inaugurated a state task force to address the growing threat of human trafficking and safeguard vulnerable citizens.
The task force is chaired by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Abia State, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, SAN.
Speaking during the inauguration in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti described the initiative as a significant and timely move aimed at confronting human trafficking and promoting human dignity across the state. Represented by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, the governor emphasized that the step goes beyond ceremony, stressing its urgency and strategic importance.
He noted that the creation of the task force reflects the government’s determination to prevent, combat, and ultimately eliminate human trafficking within the state.
Otti also highlighted the link between human trafficking and organized crime, including drug-related offenses and international criminal networks. He expressed concern over the impact of the crime on families and communities, calling for a comprehensive approach that includes enforcement, rehabilitation, and reintegration of victims.
In her remarks, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello, said the development makes Abia the 25th state in Nigeria to establish a NAPTIP-supported task force to tackle the global issue.
Uwanna, in his response, expressed confidence that the task force would help ensure Abia does not become a safe haven for human traffickers.
