The 14 Brigade of the Nigerian Army has refuted claims circulating on social media that a soldier shot a trailer driver along the Uratta Expressway in Aba over a ₦1,000 dispute, describing the report as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by Captain Muyiwa Ayara on behalf of the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 14 Brigade Ohafia, the Army clarified that the incident occurred around midnight on April 7, 2026, and involved a truck with registration number 7865 traveling from Akwa Ibom State to Abia State.
According to the statement, the truck was involved in a collision with a motorcycle carrying two civilians in the Ogbor Hill area of Aba. Following the accident, the driver reportedly attempted to flee the scene.
Troops of the 144 Battalion (Rear), stationed near the Flyover, were alerted by a civilian vehicle pursuing the truck and immediately joined the chase.
The Army explained that during the pursuit, the truck failed to stop when signaled. As it approached the Timber Market area, a soldier fired a warning shot in an effort to halt the vehicle. However, the bullet accidentally struck the driver, identified as Mr. Kelechi Ejofod, in the leg.
He was promptly taken to Rapha Hospital for medical treatment, while the matter was reported to the Nigeria Police at Uratta.
The Army expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing its commitment to professionalism and discipline. It also urged the public to disregard the false narrative, noting that a joint investigation with the Nigeria Police is ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the event.
