A cancer survivor, Deborah Mbara, has alleged that her medical report was altered and used without her consent by social media influencer Blessing Okoro, describing the experience as traumatic.
Mbara made the claim in a video shared on Instagram on Tuesday, following a statement by the Nigerian Medical Association (Delta State chapter), which confirmed that the medical report circulated by the influencer was a manipulated version originally issued to another patient.
According to the association, the report presented by Okoro to support her claim of having stage 4 breast cancer did not belong to her but had been altered. The document was traced to Xinus Medical Diagnostics, which denied issuing any such report to the influencer.
In a statement signed by the Delta NMA Chairman, Israel Adaigho, and Secretary, Usamah Hannah, the association explained that the original report was issued in May 2025 to Mbara through a referring hospital after a confirmatory breast cancer test.
The facility’s proprietor, O.A. Odigwe, reportedly contacted the association to clarify the matter after the report went viral.
“The result online from the law firm is the original version issued to the patient,” the statement noted, adding that the version circulated by the influencer had been altered.
Recounting her experience, Mbara said she had earlier assisted Okoro, believing she was genuinely ill. According to her, the influencer requested her medical report under the pretext of comparing results.
“She asked me to send my report so she could compare it with hers. I agreed, only to later discover it had been doctored and shared online to solicit donations,” she said.
Mbara expressed shock and disappointment, stating, “I thought I was helping someone in need, not knowing she had a different agenda. This is evil. I was traumatised.”
The controversy began in January when Okoro publicly claimed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and subsequently shared a medical report while soliciting financial support. She later stated that she had raised about N13 million in donations.
Reacting to the development, the Nigerian Medical Association called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter and protect the public from potential exploitation.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission disclosed that no formal petition has been filed against the influencer as of the time of reporting, despite widespread public backlash.
