Hausa Community Appeals for Larger Settlement, Improved Facilities in Abia

The leader of the Hausa community in Aba, Sarki Bello Shehu II, has presented some of the challenges facing Hausa traders and other members of the community to the Abia State Government.

Sarki Shehu, who led a delegation of community members to the Abia State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs in Umuahia on Wednesday, appealed to the government to consider developing a larger settlement along the Osioma axis.

He explained that the proposed settlement would provide space for essential facilities, including a mosque, market, schools, and residential areas to better accommodate the growing Hausa population in Aba.

According to the community leader, the increasing number of worshippers during Friday prayers has contributed to traffic congestion, making the need for a more suitable location urgent.

Sarki Shehu reaffirmed the commitment of the Hausa community to peaceful coexistence and continued support for the Abia State Government. He also commended Governor Alex Otti and his Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, for their intervention during recent security concerns involving Hausa traders in the state.

He further called for improved urban planning measures to address the conversion of residential buildings into commercial spaces, as well as the expansion of affordable transportation services across Aba metropolis.

Receiving the delegation in his office, the Abia State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu, praised the Hausa community for its peaceful relationship with other residents of the state.

Nwachukwu assured them that the administration of Governor Alex Otti remains committed to treating all residents equally, regardless of tribe, religion, or social background.

He stated that every lawful resident of Abia would continue to enjoy government protection, support, and access to welfare programmes.

The Commissioner added that the state government would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to promote peace, unity, and sustainable development across the state.
