NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Political Involvement Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu, has advised corps members to stay away from partisan politics as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.

He gave the warning on Wednesday while addressing members of the 2026 Batch A, Stream II orientation course at the temporary NYSC camp in Gusau, Zamfara State.

Nafiu reminded corps members that they may be deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ad hoc staff during elections, urging them to act as responsible ambassadors of the NYSC and the country.

“The 2027 general elections are around the corner, and you will be engaged by INEC as ad hoc staff. You must be good ambassadors of the NYSC and Nigeria whenever you serve as electoral officers,” he said.

He further cautioned them against engaging in political discussions on social media, stressing that their primary responsibility is to promote national unity and cohesion.

According to him, corps members are expected to remain law-abiding and contribute positively to national development throughout their service year.

Nafiu also encouraged them to apply the lessons learned during the three-week orientation programme, particularly those relating to peaceful coexistence, unity, and national development.

He assured the corps members of the Federal Government’s continued commitment to their welfare and security.

The NYSC DG also urged them to take the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme seriously, describing it as an opportunity for practical empowerment.

“You should make the best use of the opportunities in SAED,” he said, adding that corps members should also learn financial discipline and savings habits.

He advised them to explore multiple sources of income and consider starting businesses rather than relying solely on government employment after their service year.

Nafiu further encouraged them to respect the customs and traditions of their host communities, urging them to show kindness to the people of Zamfara State.

“Be kind to the people of Zamfara and respect their traditions,” he added.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Zamfara State, Malam Muhammad Lawan, said over 500 corps members registered for the 2026 Batch A, Stream II orientation course.

He noted that the participants had demonstrated discipline and cooperation since arriving camp, adding that security agencies and stakeholders were working closely to ensure smooth operations.

Lawan also disclosed that the Zamfara State Government had approved the establishment of a permanent NYSC orientation camp in Gusau, the state capital.
