The Abia State Police Command has dismissed as false a viral social media report alleging that 488 members of Boko Haram were recently arrested in the state.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the command clarified that the video circulating alongside the claim is an old broadcast recorded over 11 years ago and does not reflect the current security situation in Abia.
The statement, signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, described the report as misleading and intended to incite fear among residents.
“As the lead internal security agency, the command assures residents of its continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property,” the statement read, urging citizens to go about their lawful activities without fear.
The command also called on the public to support security efforts by rejecting fake news and relying only on credible and verified sources of information.
The Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, cautioned individuals against spreading false information, warning that such actions could undermine public peace and security.
He added that anyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with relevant laws, including provisions of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrime Act.
The police further urged residents to remain vigilant and work together to preserve peace in the state by resisting the spread of misinformation.
