Tragedy struck Osaa Ukwu community in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State after a man identified as Livingston Nwakanma allegedly killed his mother, Mrs. Nwaigbe Nwakanma, with a machete.

The suspect was reportedly arrested by youths in the community after allegedly fleeing the scene following the incident on Saturday.

According to reports, Nwaigbe Nwakanma, popularly known as Daa Nwaigbe, was in her kitchen preparing to make soup when her son allegedly entered the house and attacked her with a machete.

The attack reportedly resulted in the death of the woman, who was said to be a popular trader in the community’s local market.

The incident reportedly caused mourning and anger among residents, with community youths subsequently launching a search for the suspect before apprehending him after he fled from home.

The suspect was described by residents as a drug addict who had also been experiencing mental health difficulties. These descriptions have not been independently confirmed.

The deceased’s husband, Dede Nwakanma, confirmed the incident and expressed grief over the death of his wife.

The distraught father reportedly said his son had shown signs of mental instability for about four years.

The Abia State Police Command had not officially confirmed the incident at the time of filing the report.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged killing remain subject to investigation, including the motive for the attack and the suspect’s mental state.
