Key stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State have taken a significant step toward the 2027 governorship election by purchasing nomination and expression of interest forms for the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
The forms were presented to Kalu in Abuja on Saturday by a delegation made up of party leaders, professionals, and community representatives from the state’s three senatorial districts. The group said their move reflects a broad and growing agreement among party members on Kalu’s suitability for the race.
Reacting to the development, Kalu described the gesture as a “call to service,” noting that he would need time to consult before making a final decision.
“Within the next one or two days, after due consultations, I will make my position known,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, James Uko-Kalu, said the group believes the Deputy Speaker has the leadership qualities needed to reposition Abia through inclusive governance and policies focused on development.
He pointed to Kalu’s track record in the House of Representatives since 2019, including his previous role as spokesperson and his current position as Deputy Speaker, as evidence of his competence and preparedness for higher office.
“We have followed his work closely and can attest to his outstanding performance, which has translated into tangible development,” he said.
Also lending his voice, retired Major General Jack Nwaogbu said the APC in Abia has recently experienced renewed momentum, crediting Kalu’s role in promoting unity within the party.
According to him, the party, which struggled with internal divisions and poor performance in the 2023 elections, is now rebuilding its grassroots connection.
Barrister Uzo Azubuike, representing Abia South, described the initiative as a reflection of widespread demand for Kalu to contest, expressing confidence in his ability to drive meaningful change in the state.
In his remarks, Kalu expressed appreciation for the confidence shown in him and reaffirmed his loyalty to the APC. He added that his immediate focus remains strengthening the party in the South-East and rallying support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The success of the APC in Abia will depend on unity, determination, and commitment of its members,” he said.
