Labour Coalition Throws Support Behind Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid

A coalition of labour leaders and professionals, operating under the banner of Working People United (WOPU), has declared its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, in Abuja on Wednesday. According to the group, the endorsement is part of a broader plan to mobilise working-class Nigerians across various sectors.

The minister’s office confirmed the development in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Nneamaka Okafor.

WOPU, which brings together labour leaders, artisans, professionals, and workers from key industries including oil and gas, said it is expanding its role beyond traditional union advocacy to actively influence the country’s political direction.

Speaking for the group, its National President, Comr. Williams Akporeha, explained that the coalition was formed to strengthen civic engagement among working Nigerians and ensure their voices are represented in national decisions.

He said their decision to support President Tinubu followed extensive consultations across different sectors, noting that while current economic reforms have been challenging, they are necessary for long-term stability.

Akporeha acknowledged the hardships faced by Nigerians but maintained that the reforms are crucial to preventing deeper economic problems.

He also revealed that WOPU plans to leverage its nationwide network to mobilise workers and grassroots communities ahead of the next election cycle.

According to him, the coalition is well-structured across regions and sectors and will focus on educating and encouraging citizens to participate actively in the democratic process. He emphasised that the country’s future should be shaped by those who contribute to its growth daily.

The group further disclosed plans to extend its engagement to Nigerians in the diaspora, describing them as vital stakeholders in the nation’s development. Through its international network, WOPU said it aims to include them in discussions about Nigeria’s future.

Responding, Sen. Lokpobiri praised the coalition’s organisation and proactive involvement in national issues, describing it as a positive step for democratic participation.

He stressed the importance of continuous engagement between the government and organised groups, particularly in shaping policies and maintaining stability.

The minister assured the delegation that the government remains open to dialogue, feedback, and collaboration with stakeholders across different sectors, adding that governance requires collective effort.

The meeting also highlighted WOPU’s dual approach of domestic mobilisation and diaspora outreach as part of its strategy to boost political participation and national unity.

Participants reaffirmed their commitment to the coalition’s goals, adopting the slogan, “Working People United, Time for a Greater Nigeria.”

Nigeria is preparing for the 2027 general elections, during which voters will elect the President, members of the National Assembly, and state lawmakers. The Independent National Electoral Commission is expected to release detailed guidelines as the election timetable draws closer.

The upcoming polls are expected to be highly competitive, with President Tinubu widely anticipated to seek a second term, while opposition parties continue to position themselves for the race.
