A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has strongly criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over remarks he made during a recent media appearance.
In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the group described Wike’s comments as inappropriate and politically reckless. It also accused the minister of launching attacks on respected individuals without restraint.
The faction further condemned the tone and content of the media outing, describing it as lacking decorum and suggesting it was publicly funded. It characterised the appearance as “a performance full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
In a more pointed remark, the group said it was not engaging Wike’s claims directly but instead apologised to Nigerians for previously supporting his rise to positions of authority, including as governor and later as minister.
It stated, “We regret offering a platform to a person whose conduct and utterances have become a national embarrassment.”
The statement also advised individuals who feel defamed by the minister to seek legal redress, insisting that no one is above the law.
On internal party matters, the faction dismissed the notion of a “National Leader” position within the PDP, stressing that it is not recognised in the party’s constitution.
It added that ongoing party processes, including the sale of nomination forms and preparations for primaries and a national convention, would continue as scheduled.
The group further suggested that Wike’s comments may stem from dissatisfaction over his perceived inability to influence the party’s direction, particularly in relation to the emergence of its presidential candidate.
Addressing legal issues referenced by the minister, the faction said it was awaiting Certified True Copies of relevant court judgments and challenged Wike and his allies to provide clearer public explanations of the matters in question.
