President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to work closely with security agencies, emphasising that effective policing requires active citizen participation.
Speaking at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade in Abuja, the President—represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima—said national safety cannot be achieved by law enforcement alone.
“The safety of a nation cannot be outsourced to uniforms alone. I call on all Nigerians—community leaders, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society, and the private sector—to work closely with the police and other security agencies,” he said.
Tinubu warned that mistrust between citizens and law enforcement would only deepen insecurity, stressing the importance of rebuilding public confidence in policing.
“When citizens and law enforcement stand on opposite sides of suspicion, insecurity thrives,” he stated, adding that the police must remain connected to the people, responsive to their needs, and respectful of their dignity.
He urged Nigerians to begin seeing the police as partners in maintaining peace and public safety, rather than as a distant force.
The President also charged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to sustain ongoing reforms and uphold professionalism.
“To the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force, remain resolute in your commitment to reform. Let your conduct reflect the honour of the uniform you wear and inspire confidence among citizens,” he said.
Tinubu expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its security challenges through sustained reforms and collective effort.
“The road ahead may be long, but this nation is not stranded. So long as we continue to choose reform, Nigeria shall prevail,” he added.
Also speaking, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, stressed the need for accountability and discipline within the force.
“The Nigeria Police Force must rise above indiscipline and misconduct. Rank will not shield wrongdoing, and there will be no sacred cows,” he said, assuring that accountability would be firm and impartial.
Disu also pledged improved welfare, training, and operational support for officers who uphold professionalism and integrity.
National Police Day, celebrated annually on April 7, honours the service, sacrifice, and dedication of police personnel, including those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
