A chieftain of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia State, Hon. Peter Azubuike, has called on the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Benjamin Kalu, to clearly state his position on the 2027 governorship election.
Speaking during an interview, Azubuike criticized what he described as political grandstanding and urged Kalu to formally declare his ambition if he truly intends to contest. He questioned the reason behind the delay, noting that many residents of the state are waiting for clarity.
“Why the delay? What exactly is holding the Deputy Speaker back from declaring for the governorship race? Abians are eager to know his intention,” he said.
While acknowledging that democracy allows individuals to pursue political ambitions, Azubuike insisted that the people of Abia have already shown strong support for Governor Alex Otti. According to him, the governor enjoys overwhelming backing from the electorate.
He added that a significant majority of Abians are looking forward to re-electing Otti, dismissing speculations about political calculations in Obingwa Local Government Area as unfounded.
Azubuike further praised Otti’s leadership, describing his administration as one focused on building strong institutions and delivering results. He urged aspiring leaders to study the governor’s track record across different sectors, including his background in banking, as a model of competence.
He also noted that the political climate in the state has evolved, stressing that voters are now more informed and less susceptible to manipulation or propaganda.
“The people are now more aware. The 2027 election will not follow old patterns. It will be a contest shaped by the will of Abians,” he said.
According to him, support for Governor Otti is rooted in performance rather than blind loyalty, describing his leadership as widely appreciated and valued by the people. He maintained that the governor’s mandate remains strong and will be firmly defended by his supporters.
Azubuike also condemned what he termed subtle attempts at political intimidation in Obingwa, insisting that such tactics would not succeed.
He emphasized that the area has produced several prominent political figures over the years, including deputy governors, a governor, and a long-serving senator, adding that its people are now more politically aware and resistant to undue influence.
