Governor Alex Otti has formally received a former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ncheta Omerekpe, alongside other political figures into the Labour Party.
Also joining the party is Onyebuchi Ememanka, a former Chief Press Secretary to ex-Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, along with several stakeholders from the Umunnato-Ngwa political bloc, covering Osisioma, Isiala Ngwa North, and Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Areas.
The defectors, who previously belonged to the PDP, APC, and ADC, were officially received during an event held at Nbawsi Mini Stadium in Isiala Ngwa North LGA.
Addressing the gathering, Otti assured the new entrants that the party operates on the principle of equality, stressing that no member would face discrimination.
He noted that every member of the party enjoys the same rights and privileges, including the freedom to contest for any political position.
Speaking on development in the area, the governor highlighted ongoing plans to build not just an airport but a full-fledged “Airport City” in Nsulu. He explained that the project would attract major investments, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
According to him, facilities such as a Nigerian Air Force base, an international-standard hotel, and commercial plazas are part of the broader development plan tied to the airport project.
Otti acknowledged that some members of the host community had raised concerns about the project but expressed confidence that they would eventually understand its benefits.
He called for unity and dialogue, noting that the government remains committed to ensuring the project delivers long-term value to the people.
In his remarks, the acting State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr. Emmanuel Oti, said the influx of new members was driven by the governor’s performance across various sectors.
Similarly, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described the development as a major political shift, noting that the Umunnato axis had long been dominated by opposition parties.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Elder GOC Nnaji expressed satisfaction with the governor’s leadership and pledged their support for his re-election in 2027.
Other prominent stakeholders, including Darlington Nwokocha, were present at the event, marking what many described as a significant boost for the Labour Party in Abia State.
